Work of the architects Aurelio del Pozo and Luis Marín, it is located in one of the most privileged places of the city next to the Torre del Oro and the bullring of the Real Maestranza, on the banks of the Guadalquivir river, being considered one of the best avant-garde theaters in Spain. The construction of the theater began on February 10, 1987.

It was inaugurated by H.M. Queen Sofia of Spain on 2 May 1991, and a few days later, on 10 May, the first show was held, consisting of a lyrical recital featuring the world's leading Spanish opera figures of the late 20th century: Jaime Aragall, Teresa Berganza, Montserrat Caballé, José Carreras, Plácido Domingo, Alfredo Kraus, Pedro Lavirgen, Pilar Lorengar and Juan Pons. The main hall has a cylindrical shape with a capacity for 1800 spectators, with a dome measuring 47.20 metres and a stage entrance measuring 18.9 by 9.5 metres.

It is distributed in stalls, two terraces, a balcony and paradise. Thanks to its variable sound, different shows can be performed, from operas to classical music concerts and recitals, including flamenco, ballet and zarzuela. In addition to the main hall, the building contains experimental theatre halls, exhibitions, conferences and a cultural research center.

The Manuel García hall is noteworthy, where chamber operas and small format operas are represented. The Maestranza Theater is also the venue for the Royal Symphony Orchestra in Seville, which not only regularly participates in opera performances, but also holds an intense concert throughout the season.
