The site where Magellan set off on his expedition

In the Spring of 2007, several people, convened by the civic association Civiliter, developed a proposal to celebrate Magellan’s epic first voyage round the world on the 500-year anniversary of that historic event. This proposal led to the “Manifesto for the commemoration of the first circumnavigation of the Earth on its fifth centenary”. The countless signatures added to the manifest during this citizen’s initiative saw the City of Seville lend its support in 2009, presenting it to the world in Brazil during the Alliance of UN Civilizations forum in May 2010. In September of that same year, the celebrations began with the installation of an armillary sphere at the site where Magellan’s expedition first departed, from the Muelle de las mulas in Seville. Replicas of this sphere will be placed in the coming months in many cities around the world. Sevilla 2019-2022 is an important set of activities in various fields intended to commemorate on the international level the five-hundredth anniversary of the 1st circumnavigation of the Earth between September 2019 and September 2022.
