The Costurero de la Reina

Venue Overview

Costurero de la Reina (The Sewing Box of the Queen)

The „Costurero de la Reina” is a beautiful building in the form of a small castle with round turrets, crowned by small pinnacles. The construction is in the immediate vicinity of Maria Luisa Park.

This unique construction of two-tone bricks with bright and reddish-ocher stripes typical of Seville was built in the 19th century by Antonio de Orleans, Duke of Montpensier. The architect of the construction is Juan Talavera y de la Vega.

The "Costurero de la Reina" is the first neo-Mudejar-style building in Seville. The Arabic style is evident from the large windows.

One of the most famous legends around the Costurero says that Queen María de las Mercedes spent many hours in the rooms of this building because of her illness, sewing in the sun accompanied by her visiting court ladies, and that King Alfonso XII after the government business they visited on horseback from the Alcázar coming. However, this story cannot be right, because the building was built in 1893 and the queen died in 1878.
