The hotel of the 1929 Ibero-American Expo

The hotel is owned by the City of Seville and currently offers its services under an administrative concession through the Luxury Collection by Starwood hotel chain.

The work of the architect José Espiau y Muñoz, it was built between 1916 and 1928, and officially inaugurated on April 28, 1929 with the celebration of a sumptuous banquet presided over by King Alfonso XIII and Queen Victoria Eugenia. The reasons for this banquet was the wedding of the Infanta Isabel with Count Juan Zamoyski.

The hotel was in fact a winning project chosen among many others after a contest had been called under the direction of the great architect Aníbal González. Espiau won the prize and erected a building destined to be the hotel for the 1929 Ibero-American Expo. King Alfonso XIII himself showed great interest in the work and even provided suggestions for how some areas should be completed.

During the Second Republic, it was renamed the Hotel Andalucía Palace, but later returned to its original name. It is of the neomudéjar style, inspired by Arab architecture with a regionalist Andalusian touch.

It was designed in the first quarter of the 20th century, so it is architecturally integrated into the overall aesthetics of the other buildings planned for the 1929 Ibero-American Expo. As a whole, there is an important wealth of decorative elements and details that could be considered simple, since they are mostly brick, plaster, wood and ceramics.

One of the country’s most luxurious hotels.
