Seville has experience in both top-level sport and grassroots sport. Crew and canoe, equestrian sports, football, and athletics are some examples of the athletic variety in this and diverse city.
Seville’s significance in the realm of international sporting events has been demonstrated many times. In addition to the Cartuja Stadium, there are two other football stadiums, various sports complexes, and a High Performance Center (CAR for its initials in Spanish). Throughout the city, there are many other state-of-the-art, high quality facilities.
Some of the large international sporting events organized in Seville include the 1999 World Championships in Athetics (Track and Field), the European Aquatics Championships in 1997, the 2002 World Rowing Championships, the 2004 World Golf Cup, tennis’ Davis Cup Finals in December 2004 and in 2011, EuroBasket 2007, the 2013 World Men’s Handball Championship, and the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup or Euro 2021, among others. And on 18 May this year, Seville will host the final of the UEFA Europa League.
In addition, Seville will host two very important professionals events for sports. In May, the European Sports Science Congress will take place in Seville, bringing together 3,000 researchers and experts from 50 countries. And in September, the World Footbal Summit Europe will turn the city into the epicentre of the football industry.
The “Zurich Seville Marathon” deserves special attention since both its numbers and its reputation grow by the year. The course is fast and flat, attracting runners from around the world.
The “IAAF Gold Label” awarded to Seville puts the Seville Marathon on the map as one of the 31 best in the world.

The Seville Sports Institute (IMD) organises many sports programmes throughout the year: sports campus, bike rides, popular races, multi-adventure activities, sports on the river, etc. Among all these events are the Zurich Seville Marathon, the KH7 Guadalquivir Night Race, the EDP Seville Half Marathon, the City of Seville Triathlon, the Rowing Championships, the Rugby League...
In addition to all this, the city has first class sporting and urban facilities that make the practice of any sport very accessible.
